Education and Training

The mission of the Coffee Bunker is to support veterans and service members in their quest to make successful transition to civilian life. Our focus areas of support are mental health, education, employment, and family enrichment. We endeavor to provide support in a variety of ways but the primary emphasis is veteran-to-veteran peer support. Our commitment is to train veterans with the skills and resources needed to serve as Mental Health Peer Support Specialists for crisis intervention and prevention facilitation, Academic Peer Support Specialists working with veterans in college, Employment Peer Support Specialists related to working with veterans in job search and job retention, and Family Enrichment Peer Support Specialists.

Academic

Academic Peer Support Specialist

This training relates to the support of veterans who are enrolled in college. It is oriented to helping veterans understand their learning style, be aware of the variables they must manage, and set specific productivity goals. From these activities a plan for academic success is developed. The Academic Peer Support Specialist works with the veteran to work through that plan in an accountability relationship.

Advanced Peer Support Specialist Level One

CISM: Critical Incident Stress Management NOW ENROLLING for Apr 2018

A critical incident has been defined as any event which can interfere, or potentially interfere, with an individual’s ability to psychologically cope. In this two-day course, participants learn support techniques including psychological first aid and a multi-component comprehensive crisis management system. The content of the training is provided by the Oklahoma Crisis Management Network is association with the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation.

Resiliency Training - NOW ENROLLING for Jan 2018

The concept of resiliency focuses on five dimensions of strength: emotional, spiritual, family, social, and physical. Resiliency is thought of as the capability to bounce back from challenging or destructive experiences not only to survive but thrive. Resilience is thought to be critical in veteran transition to civilian life and particularly adaptation to academic life. 1 hour.

SafeTALK

Prepares participants to identify people with thoughts of suicide and connect them with life-saving first aid resources. safeTALK training focuses on using the TALK steps— Tell, Ask, Listen, KeepSafe—to immediately and constructively engage persons with thoughts of suicide and help to connect them with appropriate resources. safeTALK is produced by Living Works Education. ASIST - NOW ENROLLING for Mar 2018

Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) is a two-day course that teaches participants to carry out life-saving interventions for people at risk of suicide. ASIST is the world’s leading suicide intervention training. ASIST is produced by Living Works Education.

Advanced Peer Support Specialist Level Two

Peer Recovery Support

Note: To qualify for Level 2, participants must have completed Level 1 Training.

This training qualifies participants as Credentialed Peer Recovery Support Specialists (C-PRSS) through the Oklahoma Mental Health Association to fulfill a unique role in the support of veterans who are dealing with mental illness and with substance abuse disorders. A C-PRSS is a person in recovery from a mental illness and/or substance abuse disorder who has been trained to work with others on his/her individual road to recovery.

The training is 40 hours. Training, testing, and credentialing are under the auspices of the Mental Health Recovery Division of the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (ODMHSAS).

Mental Health: Prevention

Addressing mental health issues for veterans includes crisis care and prevention capability. The Coffee Bunker is offering training in four critical areas of prevention: communication skills, personality strength skills, marital relationship skills, and moral/spirit injury skills.

Listening Skills

“The biggest communication problem is we don’t listen to understand. We listen to reply.” Come learn how to become a more effective communicator by becoming a better listener. This course will help develop your listening skills by implementing the RUB – Respect, Understanding and Building Relationship.

Instructor: Bobby Armour, Coffee Bunker volunteer and USAF Retired.

Who’s it for? All Coffee Bunker volunteers are encouraged to attend this 2.5 hour course, and anyone wanting to improve their listening skills is welcome to attend as well.

Core Communication Skills

Core Communication Skills are at the foundation of self-management in and for quality relationships. Effective self-management skills are key to addressing current mental health issues and the development of emotional and behavioral stability. The Army’s use of this curriculum is called Strong Bonds. It focuses on communication styles, what constitutes a complete message, thorough listening skills, and methods to resolve issues. Can be used to teach communication skills for individual, couple, family, or work place growth.

Training time for certification in CCS is 36 hours.

The Power of Opposite Strengths: Your Personality “Software”

This learning program enables veterans to be aware of an embrace the pattern of strengths unique to their personality. This pattern of strengths is at the foundation of self-esteem, self-efficacy, and self-understanding. The pattern is at the core of leadership effectiveness, problem solving, relationships, and learning style. Such self-awareness is key to quality mental health.
Training time for certification is 27 hours.

The training is 40 hours. Training, testing, and credentialing are under the auspices of the Mental Health Recovery Division of the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (ODMHSAS).

Prepare-Enrich

Produced by Prepare-Enrich, Inc. This program enables couples with the tools and skills to assess their relationship, talk about their perceptions, develop strategies for addressing issues, and learn the value of continuous improvement. Relationship problems and crises are often the “trigger” event for abuse, self-abuse, and suicide. The skills learned in this program provide different ways for couples to discuss their relationship and build on their strengths. Can be used to facilitate groups for engaged and marital couples.

Training time for certification is 18 hours.

Moral Injury Support

Moral/Spirit injury is the injury that does not want to heal. It is the injury that veterans and service members are reluctant to talk about. It is characterized by the feelings from self-talk that sound like, “I cannot believe I did that,” or “I cannot believe I was part of that,” or “I cannot believe that happened to me.”

Business Process Improvement: Lean Six Sigma

Public Speaking

Being an effective public speaker can boost one’s career significantly. This training for “front of the room” skills boosts confidence, serves as a foundation for leadership in all situations, helps one think and verbalize in impromptu moments, and strengthens the ability to organize one’s thoughts. This training is developed by Toastmasters International and delivered initially through the Coffee Bunker and subsequently through a Toastmasters Club in the Tulsa area.

Team Leadership

Working in teams has become normative for most places of employment. Employers need people to lead teams. Team leadership involves a unique skill set, different from traditional supervision and/or management skills. Getting work done through others is a skill set valued by employers. Motivation skills, maximizing potential, goal setting, and encouragement are skills to be learned in this workshop.
